Separating creates an opportunity to be alone for a while and when we spend time alone, we tend to talk with ourselves more. If you are embroiled in a relationship, you should come out of it or distance yourself from it and view that problem from outside, with an unbiased view to comprehend what went wrong with your marriage. Only when you are detached and remain aloof from the problem would you be able to distinguish between good and bad. So, separation gives you a chance to detach yourself from your relationship and helps you view your differences in a completely new angle. Also, when somebody who has lived with you for months goes missing for a while like in separation, you would be able to at least gauge your feelings for them. If you miss him and feel that maybe he was right and it was your fault that had led to the separation, the purpose of the separation is solved as surely your realization will help you save your marriage by opting for reconciliation. If you do not yearn for him and on the contrary heave a sigh of relief, then you could take a good decision regarding your marriage.
